Money and the app
Is Sampati free?
The budgeting app is free and stays free — accounts, expenses, budgets, bills, goals, investments, net worth, the reviews, all of it.
The only paid part is AI capture: reading a voice note, a photo of a receipt, a bank SMS or a statement PDF for you. Every account gets six months of everything free, and a batch of AI credits to try. After that, a Premium year is NRs 1,000 and includes 300 AI credits.
Does Sampati connect to my bank?
No, and it is not going to. Sampati never asks for a bank login, a card number or an OTP, and there is no integration with any bank, wallet or cooperative.
Accounts in Sampati are labels you create — 'NIC Asia', 'eSewa', 'the cash in my wallet'. A balance is the opening figure you entered plus every entry since.
Does it work in Bikram Sambat?
Yes, and it is the default. Every entry stores both dates, so you can switch the whole app between Bikram Sambat and Gregorian whenever you like. Months, budgets, reviews and the fiscal year all follow BS — the year closes in Ashadh.
Is it in Nepali?
Both. The app opens in English and Nepali is one switch in Preferences. Numerals are separate again — you can read रू १,२५,००० in Devanagari or 1,25,000 in Latin.
Does it work offline?
Not yet. Sampati saves to your account as you go, so adding or editing an entry needs a connection. Offline entry is on the list, not in the app.
Where do the gold, silver and exchange rates come from?
The hallmark gold and silver rates published by FENEGOSIDA, and the exchange rates published by Nepal Rastra Bank. Sampati fetches both once each morning and revalues your gold and silver holdings from the tola quantity you entered.
Does it show live NEPSE prices?
No. Share holdings track your average cost, bonus shares, rights and IPO applications properly, but the last traded price is a number you enter yourself until there is a stable free source to read.
AI capture
What does the AI actually do?
It turns something you already have into a draft entry: a sentence you type or speak, a photo of a receipt or payment screen, a bank statement PDF, or — on Android — the payment alerts your phone already shows you.
It never saves anything on its own. You see the amount, category, account and date it worked out, you correct what is wrong, and you press save.
How does Sampati read my bank alerts on Android?
Only if you switch it on. Android asks you to grant notification access in your phone's settings, and you pick which apps Sampati may read — your bank, eSewa, Khalti.
The filter runs on your phone. Alerts that are not about money, and anything that looks like an OTP, are dropped before they leave the device. You can turn the whole thing off in Settings and the permission goes with it.
Why is there no bank-alert reading on iPhone?
iOS does not let any app read another app's notifications. That is an Apple platform rule, not a gap in Sampati. Everything else — typing, speaking, photos, statement PDFs — works the same on both.
What is an AI credit?
One read. Typing a sentence costs the least, a multi-page statement PDF costs the most, because that is what the underlying processing actually costs. Your remaining credits are shown in Settings, with a line-by-line history of what each read spent.
Do the AI providers keep what I send?
Sampati sends the specific thing you are asking it to read — that sentence, that photo, that PDF page — to a model provider, and the reply comes straight back to your draft. It is not sent with your name, your email or your other entries attached.
The full list of providers, and what is sent to each, is in the privacy policy.
Your data
Do you sell my data?
No. No advertising, no data brokers, no sharing with banks, insurers, employers or credit agencies. There is no analytics SDK following you around the app.
Can I get my data out?
Yes, any time, without asking. Settings has a one-tap export of every entry as CSV or JSON.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings, then Delete account. It removes your entries, accounts, budgets, goals, holdings, drafts and your sign-in, permanently, everywhere.
If you have already removed the app, the same request can be made by email — see the account deletion page.
Where is my data kept?
On Convex, the hosted database Sampati runs on, tied to your account. Sign-in is handled by Clerk. Both are named, with what each holds, in the privacy policy.
Can someone who picks up my phone see my ledger?
Turn on the app lock in Settings and Sampati asks for your fingerprint, Face ID or device passcode every time it comes back to the foreground.
Practical
Can I use it from outside Nepal?
Yes. Remittance entries record what you sent, in which currency, from which country, and the rupees that actually arrived — which is the only figure with no rounding in it. The ledger itself is in rupees only.
Do I need an account?
Yes — your ledger has to belong to something. Signing in is an email address and a six-digit code we send to it. There is no password to forget, and no Google or Facebook button.
Which phones does it run on?
Android 8.0 and up, and iOS 16 and up. It is built for phones, not tablets.
Who makes Sampati?
A very small team in Kathmandu. If something is wrong, or Nepali financial life does not fit the way the app models it, write to us — that feedback is most of the roadmap.
